Chapter Seven
Rory The sound of footsteps stopped just outside my door, and I watched the handle. That little hook and eye would not stop him if he really wanted to get in, but I hoped it was enough to send a message he would heed. My body. My choice, submissive or not. I was done being anyone’s plaything.
“Rory?”
“Go away!”
“You know it doesn’t work like that, Rory.”
“I’m not coming out! You three can play amongst yourselves.” My heart hammered. A
week ago, I never would have dared. I would never defy Kane. Not even now, but Gabe… He might make me pay for it later. But he might not.
“Rory!” Gabe’s voice cut across my thoughts, and I realised I was pacing. “No!”
“Open this door.”
I stopped, stared at the blank wood. “You’ll have to break it down. I’m not coming out!” “Look out your window, then.” His voice still held the timbre of command but none of
the sharpness, and I wondered if maybe I’d imagined the anger.
“Why?” It didn’t hurt to ask.
“Just do as I say.”
It couldn’t hurt, could it? I moved to the wall beside the window and peered between
the blinds. In the drive below, both men I’d seen in the kitchen sat astride big Harleys, helmets in place. The skinny one lifted a hand in the general direction of my window, revved his motor, and rolled out of the drive. With just a quick glance up, the bigger man followed. In seconds, they’d disappeared down the street.
“Okay?” Gabe asked from the other side of the door. He didn’t wait for my humiliated
response. “I’ll leave clothes here by the door. Apparently, Jimmy went shopping for you. You can come to the kitchen and help with dinner when you’re ready.”
His footsteps padded away.
I waited about ten minutes, until I heard pots clanging and the sounds of chopping and cooking from below, and until I was chilly enough to overcome my embarrassment. The clothes he’d left outside my door were nice—good quality, well fitting and modest. Just jeans and a T-shirt, but respectable. I’m not sure what I expected. Feeling ten times a fool, I could not force the blush from my face as I presented myself in the doorway of the kitchen a second time.
Gabe glanced up, knife stilling as he examined me, head to foot. “Good.” He resumed chopping, the knife moving fast and furious along the unfortunate carrot. “You look nice.”
Not a word about my freaking out and insulting his guests.
“Where’s Jimmy? Is he home yet?”
“He’s gone to stay with friends. I don’t expect him back.”
“Oh.”
He glanced at me. “That a problem?”
“No!” I smiled, though it felt a little stretched, and the way his lips turned down, I could tell he knew it. “Can you tell him thanks for the clothes? They fit nice.”
“They do.” Then after a minute, “You’ll need to shave to go with them, but that can wait until after supper.” He nodded towards the sink. “Wash those potatoes, please.”
“Yes, Sir.”
The silence in the room fell somewhere between taut and dangerous.
